Tortoise shell mesh is generally made by twisting three wires together to form a hexagonal pattern. Available materials include vinyl-coated wire, galvanized iron wire, and stainless steel.

It is widely used from livestock and gardening applications to construction because it is easy to handle during installation and, even if part of the wire breaks, the mesh does not easily tear across the whole structure.
